Front Porch Remodel

About two weeks after we moved into our house (two years ago), my husband realized that the white columns on our front porch…moved. They were not attached to anything—not the stone under them, not the ceiling above them. This was a bit concerning.

Then, winter came. And we realized that it actually really did bother us that the front stoop and stairs leading to our driveway (our very steep driveway) did not have a rail. It turns out ice and snow and no rail are a bad combination when you have a toddler.

But we had a few other big projects that had to be addressed (not the least of which was the flooded basement that greeted us when we returned home from our vacation to Texas last summer). It turns out a Pandemic, however, gave us plenty of time to focus on home improvement projects, however. Unfortunately, I forgot to take true “before” picture, so I’ll have to share a couple of photos from the realtor’s listing from back when we bought the house in 2018:

Before:

I admit, I was a little worried that this wasn’t going to look quite right. I agonized over which color of stain to use on the columns and rail, and I was really concerned that building a railing out over the front stoop was going to look odd. But in the end, we’re really happy with how everything turned out! It was fun shooting the final result tonight just after sunset— the light was quite pretty.

And now, we are going to give our attention to what is sure to be a very strange school year (and Hawkeye Marching Band season, for Eric). In the meantime, enjoy some images of our summer project (and reach out if you need photos of your own pandemic home improvement projects!):
