UIowa Dance BFAs - Fall 2024

When I used to teach in the University of Iowa Department of Dance, one of my classes was the BFA Seminar. I always did a shoot with the dancers toward the end of the fall semester to help them generate some professional dance photos and headshots they can use for their professional materials as they begin auditioning and applying for jobs.

This year, I was asked back to capture similar photos for this year’s group, and we did the shoot in what has become one of my favorite spaces for dance photos — and the future home of the Department of Dance! There are two particularly great spaces in the Performing Arts Annex that each have a really distinct vibe. There’s a sunken space with concrete walls and skylights that provides a lot of opportunity to play with light and shadow, which generated photos that have a bit of a “witchy” vibe that I love. There’s also a nice, bright atrium with tons of natural light that works well for capturing faster movement.
